Aase Haugen Senior Services is pleased to announce Brickl Bros., Inc. as the General Contractor to build the new nursing and assisted living facilities in Decorah.

The new facility will be approximately 72,000 square feet and will be constructed on land Aase Haugen already owns near the independent senior living neighborhoods of Vennehjem and Nabotunet. It will replace the existing facility on Ohio Street in the city of Decorah. Construction is expected to begin early in 2024. “We’re pleased to announce the selection of Brickl Bros. as our contractor for this important community project,” says Sam Boeke, Aase Haugen executive director. “We believe nursing and assisted living facilities are an important service for our community and through this project we will enrich lives, nurture faith, effect economic growth, but most importantly we are positively impacting the long-term care needs for seniors whose lives created this beautiful community we have the benefit of enjoying.”

“The entire Brickl team is very excited to partner with Aase Haugen on a project of such magnitude for this community,” says Greg Brickl, Brickl Bros., Inc. managing director. “The new long-term nursing and assisted living options are a testament to Aase Haugen’s commitment and continued investment in senior living for people of this region. We are looking forward to a partnership that will provide quality facilities to care for seniors for years to come.” Brickl will also be utilizing local subcontractors throughout the project. Established in 1970, Brickl Bros., Inc. is 100% employee-owned with more than 70 employee-owners.

The current building is more than 60 years old and presents challenges including near-constant repairs with antiquated mechanical systems and inefficient workflow as well as the challenges with electronic connectivity in a steel building. The new facility design offers a cozy, homey feel with emphasis on natural light along with private rooms and bathrooms for each resident. Not only will the new building feature new technology, including green options where the budget permits, it’ll be built with the intention of maximized care. For example, the dementia unit nursing station is centralized so all rooms are within view and the dementia care environment will be designed to suit the specialized needs of those residents – including a walking path. “The very people we take care of today are the ones who built our community and made it the incredible place it is today,” said Steve Langland, president of the board of directors. “It’s a critical service that we’re providing to not only those seniors but also their families and we invite this community to support the effort through our capital campaign to build ‘A New Place to Call Home.”

The capital campaign steering committee has raised more than $1.2 million toward the $3 million goal for the campaign. “Community support from businesses and individuals has been gratifying,” says Sam Boeke, Aase Haugen executive director. “As we fundraise, we’re not only thinking about the facility, but also how we will contribute to community growth and continue to improve care for the community’s aging population.”

That care extends to those who do not have the resources to care for themselves. Governed by 23 local churches, Aase Haugen’s mission is caring for those in need, and charity or under-reimbursed care is made possible by gifts. “We have so much gratitude for each gift that is given to our mission,” says Boeke. “We are focused on achieving our goal of $3 million and we’re excited for this year to be a banner year for Aase Haugen.”
