Aase Haugen Senior Living Decorah, IA Building Plan

A $12.7 million loan from U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development was awarded today to Aase Haugen Senior Services to help with the construction of a nursing and assisted living complex on Nordic Drive in Decorah.

According to Aase Haugen Executive Director, Sam Boeke, “Aase Haugen has grown and adjusted with the needs in our communities for more than 107 years. Our next phase of building will secure our position as long-term care leaders, provide much needed senior living options for our community, and most importantly – give the folks who live with us now the new home they deserve.”

Aase Haugen Board of Directors President, Steve Langland, says, “We are very grateful to our outstanding staff who have spent countless hours of work to reach this goal. Our community will benefit for the next 100 years as we watch Aase Haugen’s legacy live on in a new place for folks to call home.”

Construction is projected to begin in 2024 with an 18-month completion date. The complete project is estimated at approximately $18 million, and the balance of the expense will be achieved through local, self-funded loans, a capital campaign, and a one-million-dollar ERHC grant which was awarded in February.

The new facilities will be located across the street from Aase Haugen’s independent neighborhoods of Vennehjem and Nabotunet on 40 acres of land owned by Aase Haugen. Architecture includes embracing natural light, a Chapel and comfortable living neighborhoods as well as utilizing the latest in technology. Aase Haugen will continue to provide the areas only licensed CCDI (Chronically Confused Dementing Illness) 18-bed unit, specializing in intermediate and advanced dementia care.

“This is a natural extension of our Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) philosophy – to provide all levels of senior care in one organization and now this will be accomplished on one campus in a beautiful neighborhood – it’s a dream come true,” said Langland.
